Thousands of jobs threatened as federal job creation program expires

Tomorrow marks the end of the fiscal year. In the absence of a funding bill, Congress is working to pass a short term funding measure to keep the government running. One thing that is not expected to be included is a funding extension for a job creation program that was part of the stimulus bill and has put 240,000 people to work. FSRN’s Leigh Ann Caldwell reports.

Advocates push for funding for critical HIV/AIDS treatment

Advocates for people with HIV/AIDS rallied in the front of the White House Wednesday to push for more funding for treatment. They say increasing waiting lists for AIDS Drug Assistance Programs, or ADAPs, will mean an increase in deaths for people who can’t afford the medications. Michael Lawson files this report.

Officials unveil federal plan for long term recovery in Gulf of Mexico

On Tuesday Navy Secretary Ray Mabus released the federal government's plan for long term recovery in the Gulf of Mexico following BP's oil disaster. The 130-page report recommends that Congress use money collected under the Clean Water Act for Gulf Coast recovery. It also maps out clear goals for restoration, which include resilient coastal wetlands and barrier islands to maintain natural resistance to storms. And it recommends the creation of a task force to oversee the process.

Argentina’s supreme court nears ruling on media law

Argentina's high court is poised to rule on the country’s new media law, parts of which have already gone into effect. The law will radically transform media ownership regulations, allowing more access to and diversity of broadcast content. But media corporations have been fighting it through the courts. Tuesday, tens of thousands of supporters of the law rallied in front of the Supreme Court calling for it to be implemented in full. FSRN’s Marie Trigona reports from Buenos Aires.
