Cities move to enact tax on plastic bags

More than 80 billion plastic bags are produced in the U.S. every year, and only a fraction is ever recycled. In an effort to cut down on litter, Washington DC recently enacted a five-cent tax on plastic and paper bags. The tax has attracted criticism, but it’s not the first city to discourage the use of non-biodegradable bags. Last July, Philadelphia’s city council attempted to ban plastic bags for the second time since 2007, but the proposal couldn’t win the support for it to pass. FSRN'S Matthew Petrillo has more.
