Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez: the Poor People’s President
People in Venezuela adore their president. They talk of Hugo Chavez using words like “love,” “amigo,” “the ultimate,” and there is real passion in their voices, almost like they are describing their favorite pop group or a living legend. In contrast, others in Venezuela – mostly wealthy, mostly white – have a feverish dislike of President Chavez. But not in the low-income neighborhood of El Valle. Join Deepa Fernandes and Matt Rogers for a journey into people’s homes and hearts to see why, despite a coup and a 3 month long crippling shut-down of industry, President Hugo Chavez has maintained the loyalty of the majority of poor Venezuelans.
