Roman Harrison breakdances before the start of the March for Real Climate Leadership in Oakland, which organizers described as the largest anti-fracking march in U.S. history. Food workers from UNITE HERE local 2850 were among a large contingent of California unions that turned out for the march. The Oakland organization Rock the Bike provided a pedal-powered sound system for the event. Get Up Street Theater (GUST) uses a gas station as the backdrop for its performance. Kayakers join the march as it circles Lake Merritt. Juan Flores, a community organizer with the Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment, is a resident of Kern County in the Central Valley, where most of California’s fracked wells are located. Marchers call on Governor Jerry Brown to follow New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s lead and issue a statewide fracking ban.
